Thinking about a river cruise in France? Our latest Cruise Ship Tour, in the carousel above, offers a deck-by-deck look at one of the most elegant vessels on a French waterway, Tauck’s Emerald.

As can be seen in the tour, the Rhone River-based ship boasts spacious accommodations and stylish public areas that are designed to complement the upscale travel company’s focus on intimate, highly choreographed, all-inclusive river trips.

Originally launched in 2006, Emerald recently emerged from a massive makeover that included a complete rebuilding of its middle deck with cabins that are 50% bigger than before. The overhaul cut the capacity of the 361-foot-long vessel from 118 to just 98 passengers, a change that resulted in an unusual level of intimacy for a ship its size. Other river cruise operators with ships of the same length in France pack in as many as 30 to 50 more people.

The makeover of Emerald also brought upgrades to its secondary restaurant, Arthur’s, located on its upper deck. In addition, two sets of connecting cabins were added to the ship, a nod to the growing number of families taking river cruises.

Emerald operates seven- to nine-night sailings on the Rhone through France’s Provence region, stopping in such riverfront towns as Avignon, Arles and Lyon. The trips are paired with hotel stays in Paris and, in some cases, Monte Carlo.

The Emerald photo tour is part of our ongoing series of cruise ship galleries. For an in-depth look at dozens of other vessels, click on the links below:

When you regularly travel for work, making small talk comes with the territory – whether it’s with your seatmate on a flight, your cab driver as you’re navigating a new city or with a fellow patron wherever you choose to grab a bite to eat between meetings.

But what you may not realize is that mastering the art of small talk can also improve your business trip, and open you up to sights and experiences that you might have otherwise missed while traveling.

Keynote speaker and educator Debra Fine wrote the book on small talk. Several books, actually. Bestselling author of three titles including The Fine Art of Small Talk: How to Start a Conversation, Keep It Going, Build Networking Skills and Leave a Positive Impression, Fine frequently travels for work educating people on how to cultivate people skills and use them to their advantage.

“I teach conversation skills, mingling tips and repertoire building techniques to people from all kinds of professions who need to gain those kinds of tools because they weren’t born with the gift of gab,” Fine said.

Maximizing your time on a business trip

While her clients dictate how much free time she’ll have in her schedule on a trip, Fine makes it a point to explore the place she’s visiting by employing a few different strategies. “I try to walk and not take a car – even if it’s provided by the client – because it lets me see where I’m at and how the people live,” Fine said. “I will use a lot of those anecdotes in my program that morning when I tailor it. That also goes for the evening if I can walk to dinner. I try to walk as much as I can to make the most of my time.”

On trips where she’s afforded more leisure time such as her recent trip to Seattle, Fine rents a bicycle. “I’m pretty committed to not sitting in a hotel room,” she said. “In most major cities you can get a bicycle pretty easily. There are so many rewards to bicycling. You not only see and catch the flavor of the city, but you’re active at the same time. You get to see real life, instead of sitting in a car where you only get to see the highlights.”

Leveraging the art of small talk while traveling

Engaging in small talk can undoubtedly help build connections that will impact your business for the better. But Fine points out that having an exit strategy can be just as important as the small talk itself.  For example, when Fine was recently flying to a speaking engagement, a fellow passenger engaged her in conversation while she was trying to catch up on work. “I used an exit strategy and said, ‘I really need to get to work, I hope you enjoy the rest of the trip.’ That’s a technique to be used so that you don’t come across as being abrupt or cold to somebody –  be civil and warm and yet exit the conversation firmly.”

If you’re looking to strike up a conversation, Fine suggests looking for common ground. “Restaurants typically have a bar that has the news or a sports game on,” said Fine. “I’ll strike up a conversation with someone and use the default of one of these teams, or ‘What’s the worst weather disaster that’s ever happened to you?’ Anything that’s common to both of us about what’s happening on TV and the news that day.”

However, do take social cues into consideration before approaching someone. “Always respect boundaries – if someone doesn’t appear approachable let them be,” said Fine. “Every conversation is an opportunity to connect, and that’s how you do build business relationships. You’re showing an interest in other people, people are showing an interest in you, and you become collaborators or a referral source.”

What makes business travel better

When you spend more time on the road than at home, it’s the little things that help make your trip more efficient. For Fine, being able to charge her devices without spending time tracking down an outlet when she’s short on re-charge time is key.

“La Quinta rooms have convenient outlets, so I’m not running around the room looking for where the plugs are,” said Fine. Also, being enrolled in a rewards program allows for an easy check-in. “To be a frequent traveler and already have my information on file makes my travel much easier,” she said. “In my case, I want my room to be near the elevator because I want to be able to get on and get off [easily]. They have that in my file.”

From business to “been there”

For business travelers who want to see and do all they can while still honoring their work commitments, Fine said small talk can be a gateway to new experiences. “I was able to go to a viewpoint someone had recommended to watch the sun set,” she said. “I don’t think you find that by [searching online]. It made me feel like I had really seen Seattle.”

“Small talk is the appetizer of any relationship,” said Fine. “My goal is to turn every conversation into an opportunity. You just never know who you’re going to meet.”

Overview

blue ridge parkway
(Photo: jaredkay, Getty Images/iStockphoto)

The Blue Ridge Parkway is a nearly 469-mile-long photo op, carving a path of stunning beauty through the southern Appalachian Mountains.

Though the name makes clear that the park is amenable to auto travel, there are endless opportunities for hiking, backpacking, picnicking, camping, watching the wildlife, absorbing cultural history and plain old sightseeing.

The flowery blue mountain views are right outside your car windows, but there is even more splendor to be found away from the road. Among the highlights are the many waterfalls.

“If you’re looking for great photography or scenery, you can’t go wrong with a waterfall,” says Kevin Adams, author of the guidebook North Carolina Waterfalls. “Let’s face it, all waterfalls are beautiful.”

Still, he uses a “beauty rating” scale of 1 to 10 in his book to help people decide which of the 1,000 waterfalls to visit. Adams urges caution: Heed all signs on where to safely view waterfalls, and never climb on the slippery rocks around waterfalls.

Three falls on the parkway are among his highest-rated:

•Linville Falls. Beauty rating: 10. Access a network of trails to the falls starting at the Linville Falls Visitor Center at Milepost 316.5. The easy- to moderate-difficulty trails run on both sides of the Linville River, which starts at the 100-foot-high waterfall and drops 2,000 feet over its 12 miles through the Linville Gorge.

•Crabtree Falls. Beauty rating: 9. The trailhead is at Milepost 339.5 near Spruce Pine. The 5-mile loop trail is moderately difficult, but the payoff is the gorgeous 70-foot falls. The Crabtree Meadows area is also awash in wildflowers in the spring and has a campground and picnic area.

•Graveyard Fields. There are three waterfalls in this popular area at Milepost 318. Beauty rating: Second Falls has the highest at a 7. There is a hike to the 55-foot-high Second Falls, which plunges into a deep pool just steps from the trail. It is perhaps the only disabled-accessible waterfall on the parkway, as anyone with a car can see Second Falls from an overlook on the parkway.

About the park

Size: 469 miles, starting at Shenandoah National Park in Virginia and ending at Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina.

Visitors: 15.2 million in 2016.

Established: 1935.

History: Established as a public works project during the Great Depression, the parkway took more than 50 years to complete. The final section, Linville Viaduct, was finished n 1987.

When visiting: The headquarters and the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor Center are off U.S. Highway 74A at Milepost 384 in Asheville, N.C. There are numerous access points through Asheville, the most populous city along the North Carolina section. For park information, call 828-348-3400 or visit nps.gov/blri.

Of note: The parkway runs through the Black Mountains of North Carolina, which include five of the 10 highest peaks east of the Mississippi. The tallest is 6,684-foot high Mount Mitchell, off Milepost 355 in Yancey County.

Overview

Some people settle with the idea that flying is an uncomfortable experience, but that doesn’t need to be the case. And while we don’t have tricks for avoiding nosey seatmates who steal the armrest, we do have some simple tips that can make your journey a little more comfortable.

Choose the right plane

We all look at flight times and prices, but have you ever considered the plane make and model? If not, maybe you should. If you are prone to altitude sickness when flying, buy a seat on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the Airbus A350. The cabins on these planes are pressurized about 2,000 feet lower than on other commercial airliners. You’ll find that you breathe easier and sleep better on long flights. The interiors of these planes are also more humid so your nasal passages and eyes, if you wear contacts, will be more comfortable.

Center yourself

If you’re prone to air sickness, try to get a seat over the wings. It’s like sitting on the fulcrum of a seesaw: There’s less motion up and down.

Plug ‘em up

Wear ear plugs, and not just when you’re trying to sleep. You may not realize how loud the engines are because the sound comes off as background noise, but according to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the sound is typically around 85 decibels (dB) at cruising and can reach 120 dB at takeoff and landing. The sound could affect your sleep, or unknowingly cause stress. If the sound really bothers you, pick a seat in front of the wings, which tends to be a little quieter.

Shut it out

Eye shades are great for sleeping, especially as seat mates may have the glowing screens of their phones, laptops or seat-back TVs turned on during the flight. Pro tip: Eye shades also do the trick for avoiding a talkative seatmate.

No drinks onboard

Hate to kill the fun, but you should avoid drinking alcohol too. Sure, it may ease your nerves, but flying already makes you dehydrated and alcohol only exacerbates the problem. Save the booze for a toast upon your arrival.

Monitor screen time

Finally, limit (or even go without) screen time. The blue screens and light can impact your sleep. Instead, kick it old school with a good book. Or, better yet, a boring one if shuteye is your goal.

Overview

The top three nations that the world’s millions of expatriates prefer to move to are Bahrain, Costa Rica and Mexico, according to a new survey by InterNations, a global network for expatriates.

They replace last year’s top three destinations: Taiwan, Malta and Ecuador.

About 13,000 people in 188 countries took part in this year’s survey.

The ranking of the 65 top destinations for expats was based on more than 40 factors, including family life and finances.

Participants said they chose Bahrain because of the ease of settling in there and its numerous career opportunities.

Costa Rica made it to the top because of the ease of settling in, family life and quality of life.

Despite concerns about safety and security, Mexico made the top of the list for its climate, welcoming people and affordable cost of living.

Last year, the USA ranked in 26th place. This year it dropped to the bottom half of rankings, partly because fewer expats rated the political stability of the USA positively.

Last updated: Saturday at 7:25 p.m. ET.

Flight cancellation numbers were finally trending down Saturday for the first time in a week, suggesting a slow recovery from Harvey’s effect on aviation may finally be under way.

More than 680 flights have been grounded on Saturday and preemptive cancellations already stretched into next week, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware.

But Saturday’s tally marked a significant improvement from the Harvey-related woes of the past week, when more than 1,100 flights were canceled each day since last Saturday (Aug. 26). About 400 flights had already been canceled for Sunday and another 370 for Monday.

FLIGHT TRACKER: Is your flight on time?

Nationwide, more than 12,000 flights have been canceled since Harvey first began affecting flights in Texas. Nearly all of those have come in Houston, where the city’s Bush Intercontinental and Hobby airports have been the hardest hit by the storm.

Both airports had closed by Sunday and remained so through Wednesday afternoon. Even then, their restart has been slow.

Southwest, for example, wasn’t expected to begin flying at all at Hobby airport until noon local time on Saturday. Southwest is by far the busiest airline there.

United has been ramping up its schedule at Bush Intercontinental (IAH), where the carrier operates its second-busiest hub. Earlier, the carrier warned it could take “weeks” for normal operation to resumes. Now, United says it’s resumption of service in Houston is going faster than expected.

United spokeswoman Maggie Schmerin told Today in the Sky on Saturday that “our employees are rallying to restore service faster than originally anticipated. We continue to increase the number of departures and arrivals at IAH and anticipate operating all scheduled flights by Sept. 8.”

The agency that runs the two Houston airports advised fliers to expect continued disruptions, and not to come to the airports unless they had confirmed the status of their flights.

“The plan is to begin a phased return to service, with full service expected by the end of Labor Day weekend,” Houston Airports said in a Friday statement. “Contact your air carrier for specific flight status updates regarding your flight. Only those with a ticket for a confirmed scheduled flight should come to the airport. Many roads around the City of Houston are still unsafe for travel, therefore, we urge all passengers to take their time arriving to the airports and to solidify a safe route to and/or from our facilities.”
